The Monterey Historics: Glorious Man, Glorious Machines

August, 2011.

I wasn’t intent on going up this year, despite the fact that a bunch of friends were. However, Brandon’s expectant wife went into labor early, and he generously offered his motel room to me. I couldn’t pass it up. We were going up for the Concorso Italiano, the Monterey Historics (now called the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion… whatever…), as well as the Concours d’Elegance at Pebble Beach.

Thursday morning, day of the trip, and of course, my Subaru WRX wouldn’t start. Dead battery. Afshin kindly offered me his Mini (John Cooper Works!), and after a brief but entertaining ride with a grumpy Russian cab driver railing about the government, I arrived at Afshin’s, got the keys to the Mini, and was off.

This time, the ticket came on the way up, again, in Paso Robles. But at this point in my life, I just don’t care about things like traffic tickets. Life’s too short to worry about a fine or a bump in your insurance premiums.
